What are activated carbon filters?

Activated carbon filters are exactly what the name suggests: they filter smoke using activated carbon, which is distributed throughout the filters. Carbon has long been used to Cleaning or filtering of liquids or gases. Their properties and adsorption capabilities make them suitable for a wide range of applications. In a few years’ time, it will probably be inconceivable to smoke without an activated carbon filter.

For example, activated carbon is used to remove chlorine or ozone from water, or toxins from the air – in much the same way as a respirator mask. In alcoholic drinks such as rum and vodka, activated carbon helps to filter out unwanted colouring and flavouring agents. Particularly when smoking cigarettes and joints, it filters out tar and numerous other harmful substances.

Activated carbon filters were originally developed for pipes. In 1934, the pipe brand Vauen discovered the filtering properties of activated carbon and developed a 9 mm-wide filter, which continues to this day to determine the hole size in pipes. These filters are still in use today, known as „Dr. Pearl Junior“. How effective are activated carbon filters?

Most people use activated carbon filters when rolling their CBD or THC joints. Whether to use it on its own or not is the next decision to make. In the Tobacco contains at least 250 substances that are harmful to health. An activated carbon filter can remove the majority of these.

In 2018, various institutions in Pennsylvania carried out a comparative study which found that activated carbon filters are considerably more effective at removing gaseous free radicals than conventional Cigarette filters can be filtered. So it’s worth trying out the filters.

How do activated carbon filters affect the effect of a joint?

When you order an activated carbon filter for the first time, you might be concerned that a large proportion of the active ingredients will be filtered out whilst you’re smoking.

However, this has not yet been proven in any study, as tar and free gases, in particular, adhere to the activated carbon. Given the more pleasant smoking characteristics and the improved smoking experience, the use of an activated carbon filter is recommended when smoking.

What are the differences between the various activated carbon filters?

These are just 5.9 mm wide and most closely resemble the classic filter tips. However, even smaller activated carbon filters are now available.

How do activated carbon filters compare with filter tips?

The classic filter tips made of cardboard, paper or bus tickets are more commonly used as „Joint holder“ or as „Joint filter“ . They filter out a maximum of just 3 % of harmful substances from a hand-rolled, enhanced cigarette. It has not yet been possible to determine exactly how much the activated carbon actually filters out. Ultimately, this also depends on the blend itself.
